KARACHI:
On 2nd December 2023, the Chilas Passenger Bus was attacked while en route from Gahkuch, Gilgit to Islamabad. Unknown gunmen opened fire upon its arrival in Chilas at 6:30 pm resulting in 10 fatalities and 26 injuries. The incident also involved a collision with another vehicle. The motive behind the shooting remains unknown.
The victims of this tragedy were ordinary people on a routine journey expecting nothing more than the usual concerns about accidents. However, they faced an unfortunate turn of events — a terrorist attack. Terrorism extends beyond major incidents like bomb explosions and school attacks as exemplified by this incident. Even everyday bus commuters now experience the terror associated with such acts.
The government and authorities must promptly respond to this attack as it directly pertains to the fundamental right to the safety of every common individual. Those in positions of authority bear the responsibility of ensuring the safety and security of every person irrespective of their financial status — be they bus passengers, homeowners, students or employees of an organisation. Every citizen has the right to feel secure and the government should be held accountable for this crucial aspect.
