Poor reading culture

Poor reading culture

KARACHI:

Reading culture refers to the attitudes, behaviours and practices within a community or society, whereas library culture reflects how frequently individuals in a society or community use library resources. Both reading and library culture encourage people to read regularly, whether for leisure, education or personal grooming. These cultures play a crucial role in shaping individuals’ and communities’ intellectual and educational development. Unfortunately, like other developing countries, Pakistan also faces many challenges.

Most people have a lower inclination towards reading due to a poor literacy rate. The majority of our youth does not have exposure to educational resources and opportunities. This coupled with challenging economic conditions further discourages people from reading or visiting libraries because these activities are seen as leisure. Most districts lack established and well-equipped libraries. The absence of adequate infrastructure hinders people’s access to reading materials and library services. Libraries often lack sufficient books to fulfil the demands of the local communities. Such limitations prevent people from visiting libraries and reading books of their choice. Similarly, in every district, very few book suppliers exist and they do not offer the desired books as per the demand of their society. In every big city, you will find cinemas, restaurants and parks, but very rarely can you find a library for the general public.

The absence of books in regional languages and a language barrier have also affected reading culture. The education sector must work with institutes to improve awareness and encourage students to read. Digital initiatives such as e-libraries and improved access to a range of books online can further prompt an interest in reading. Promoting local authors, study spaces and mobile libraries are the best tools to empower the youth of Pakistan to foster a reading and library culture.
