Promoting tolerance

KARACHI:

Societies and nations flourish when they prioritise a robust legal and justice system along with values such as harmony, tolerance, inclusivity and coexistence. Diversity, a catalyst for innovation and creativity, propels development. The escalating levels of violence and intolerance in our society impede progress. Polarisation and division across religion, politics, culture and socio-economic status erode unity and social harmony. This discord allows individuals to exploit others for personal gain contributing to an atmosphere of violence. This not only leads to social unrest but also tarnishes Pakistan’s global image.

All stakeholders bear a constitutional and ethical responsibility to promote kindness and tolerance. Religious scholars should actively share teachings from the Quran and Hadees on kindness, love and the rights of minorities and non-believers. Parents must instil in their children an understanding of different beliefs and cultures fostering empathy and open-mindedness. Educators can contribute significantly by designing inclusive curricula and teaching styles and educating about the importance of tolerance and the detrimental effects of hate. This proactive approach can shift attitudes and enhance understanding.

Law enforcement should act strictly against hate mongers to set a precedent. The legal and justice systems must actively counter hate speech, prejudice and discrimination. Media and civil society organisations should champion intercultural dialogue by launching campaigns that foster harmony and acceptance. Festivals and cultural events serve as excellent platforms to unite people and encourage mutual understanding. Participation in these events facilitates learning about diverse cultures building bridges between communities. Achieving a peaceful society requires collective effort and commitment. Everyone should treat others with respect and kindness irrespective of their background. By advocating harmony and tolerance, we can collaboratively strive towards building a better, more inclusive world.
