KARACHI:
Last month, the BBC revealed the names of the inspiring and influential women on the BBC 100 Women list for 2023. Three Pakistani women were on this prestigious list. Among them, the most notable figure is Afroze-Numa, a Wakhi shepherdess hailing from the Shimshal Valley, who stands as one of the last remaining Wakhi shepherdesses.
Every year, she leads her flocks of goats and yaks up to the Pamir Mountains, following an age-old tradition alongside other local shepherdesses. Amidst the mountain terrain, she skillfully crafts dairy products from the animals. As one of the last representatives of her kind, she embodies true courage and inspiration. The diverse ethnicities of Pakistan embody a multitude of unique and rare cultural traditions with thousands waiting to be explored.
Northern Pakistan is often regarded as the most multilingual and multicultural region within the country. It holds immense significance for its ethnicities. The distinctive customs and traditions of the Kalash people serve as just one example among many others yet to be unearthed. This region deserves greater attention from those in positions of power. Northern areas are a frequently visited travel destination boasting rare and unique fauna and flora. Increased media coverage and attention are necessary to draw more visitors to this region.
