Extortionist system

Extortionist system

KARACHI:

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) advised the Pakistani government to efficiently allocate its resources to develop climate-resilient infrastructure, especially after the damage caused by last year’s super floods. Regrettably, the Sindh government, as has been the case in the past, appears to have paid little attention to this advice. The administration in Sindh is known for its reliance on commissions, kickbacks and a share of funds allocated for public welfare schemes.

There seems to be little hope for Sindh, as those tasked with the responsibility of safeguarding the public are themselves embroiled in corruption and extortion. Just last week, a deputy superintendent of police (DSP) in Karachi was accused of participating in the robbery of millions of rupees. This week, cricketer Sohaib Maqsood was harassed by police officials on the Sindh highway. Similarly, when the ruling elite demanded compensation from the Loss and Damage Fund to address the climate change-induced floods of 2022, they were not moved by the plight of those affected. They instead saw this as another opportunity to amass wealth.

During the floods of 2010 and 2022, both local and foreign humanitarian and philanthropic organisations faced challenges in obtaining a No Objection Certificate as local authorities demanded bribes. It is a matter of shame and extreme cruelty that we lack the resources to support our people, yet when foreigners offer assistance, we demand commissions. According to reports, a contractor working on the Wahi-Johi road was approached by a local landlord who demanded millions of rupees in commission. The majority of infrastructure rehabilitation and reconstruction projects are financed through loans. As common and hapless citizens, we bear the burden of repaying these loans with interest. Meanwhile, the ever-expanding parasitic class continues to lead a luxurious life fueled by extortion.
