KARACHI:
Recent observations have uncovered a concerning pattern where large bats are utilising exposed local electricity distribution wires as roosting sites, suspending themselves upside down. Unfortunately, this behaviour has led to the immediate electrocution of numerous bats attributable to insufficient separation between the two power lines. This has resulted in a significant decline in their population. Bats are crucial contributors to our ecosystem, aiding in pest control, pollination and seed dispersal. The depletion of these creatures could have profound repercussions for the local environment.
I urgently request relevant authorities to address this matter and implement measures to prevent further harm to the bat population. The closed space around these wires serves as an unintended trap for bats. To mitigate this issue, it is essential to assess and modify the existing infrastructure. A thorough inspection should be conducted to identify locations where enclosed spaces with bare electric wires pose a threat. Infrastructure modifications are essential to minimise risks to the bat population.
Protective measures, such as insulating the wires or installing barriers to prevent bats from accessing hazardous areas should be promptly implemented. Seeking guidance and advice from wildlife and environmental experts is crucial to adopting effective and environmentally sustainable measures. Together, we can ensure the safety of these vital contributors to our ecosystem. I wish to reiterate the importance of the government and concerned authorities upholding their commitment to environmental responsibility and community welfare. Collaborating with relevant organisations to address this issue will not only aid in the preservation of biodiversity but also demonstrate a dedication to sustainable practices.
