Drug addiction

Drug addiction

KARACHI:

Pakistan has several million individuals engaging in drug use with cannabis being the most commonly abused substance. The high incidence of drug abuse has raised concerns about the potential spread of an HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) epidemic. Thousands of individuals between the ages of 15 and 64 misuse prescription drugs for non-medical reasons.

I have had conversations with individuals undergoing addiction treatment in a hospital and I observed that very few of them are genuinely committed to breaking free from addiction. The majority claimed that discontinuing drug use was an overwhelming challenge due to the accessibility of drugs. They said that drugs were readily available in every locality eliminating the need for extensive efforts to obtain them.

Drug addiction is a serious health concern that requires immediate and comprehensive solutions. This involves thoroughly examining and addressing its root causes, implementing strict regulations to control the trade of drugs and providing the necessary resources and support for addiction treatment and recovery. Law enforcement agencies can play a critical role in tracking and dismantling drug mafias. The well-being and progress of our nation depend on these actions. Therefore, the authorities must act promptly and decisively to tackle this pressing issue, leading the way towards a healthier, drug-free Pakistan.
