Pneumonia crisis

KARACHI:

Pneumonia, a lung infection causing fluid or pus accumulation in the air sacs, poses a significant threat. In a recent seminar on healthcare in Balochistan, Dr Shabbir Lahri, Vice Chancellor of Bolan Medical College, and other medical professionals emphasised that children under the age of 2 and individuals over 65 are particularly vulnerable due to weakened immune systems. Pneumonia can affect one or both lungs, sometimes without noticeable symptoms.

The seminar stressed the diverse causes of pneumonia, including bacteria, viruses, and fungi. Dr Nasir Azim emphasised the contagious nature of bacterial or viral pneumonia urging caution. Lifestyle factors such as smoking and excessive alcohol consumption were identified as contributors to increased pneumonia risk. Symptoms of pneumonia can vary making early detection crucial. Experts highlighted the importance of promptly consulting doctors when symptoms arise.

The seminar brought together experts to share knowledge, advocate preventive measures and encourage proactive health practices to address the urgent issue of pneumonia in Balochistan. The distribution of shields symbolised a collective commitment to combatting pneumonia’s impact reflecting the collaborative effort needed to safeguard public health. The provincial health department must uphold its commitment to combatting diseases and safeguarding public health.
