Every student possesses unique strengths in their approach to studying. Some students excel in reading while others showcase exceptional writing skills. There are also those who stand out in their ability to absorb information through active listening. They can quickly memorise and recall details during lectures. However, it’s important to recognise that each student’s strengths are diverse. For instance, if a student demonstrates a talent for creative writing in class, teachers may encourage their peers to develop similar skills.
There’s a prevailing belief among teachers that a student with impeccable handwriting is likely to outperform others, even if the content is inaccurate. Teachers sometimes build the misconception that an examiner will be lenient in grading due to the impressive handwriting. Conversely, a student with less aesthetically pleasing handwriting, despite providing accurate content, may not receive the recognition they deserve. This notion, however, is flawed.
Comparing students with one another is discouraging for them because they can wrongly believe that they lack the same qualities as their peers. A student lacking in conventional skills, such as good handwriting, may excel in creative writing, critical thinking, exploration, observation or other distinctive abilities. Teachers should acknowledge and celebrate the diverse strengths of every student without resorting to comparisons. Constant comparison only serves to foster discouragement among students.
