Rising robbery cases

Letter November 16, 2023
Rising robbery cases

KARACHI:

There is growing worry and insecurity in Karachi due to rising incidents of robberies. The security and welfare of the citizens must be the top government priority, but it is depressing to see the criminal activity rising and rising, thereby affecting the routine lives of the citizens. Besides a financial loss, the incidents of robberies and snatching have had a psychological impact on the victims.

While it is claimed that law enforcement agencies are doing their best to uphold the rule of law, it is clear that more needs to be done to prevent the rise in crime. The authorities should take up this matter in an efficient manner through better surveillance systems, increased police patrols in high risk areas and active local policing. Furthermore, there should be a comprehensive plan of action for crime prevention drawn up by public authorities and law enforcement agencies in close liaison with businesses, residents and communities. Efforts should include neighborhood watch schemes and public awareness campaigns in order to address underlying causes of crime.

The citizens of Karachi can no longer just watch helplessly as the city security and safety deteriorate. In the fight against crime, all the citizens should be on their guard, report any suspicious activity and give assistance to local law enforcement authorities.

Through this piece, I expect to raise public awareness so that the authorities are pushed to devise a strategy for addressing the increased number of robbery cases in Karachi. Public awareness and discussion are necessary to drive positive change and put pressure on the authorities to act.
