KARACHI:
It is deeply unfortunate that, despite global advancements in organ transplantation, Pakistan lags behind in fostering a culture of organ donation. Recent data reveals a grim reality, with over 150,000 lives lost annually in Pakistan due to organ failure, including 40,000 from kidney failure and 70,000 from liver failure. These staggering figures underscore the potential for saving countless lives through organ transplantation.
In contrast to Pakistan, other Islamic countries such as Iran and Saudi Arabia actively support organ donation. Despite the passing of legislation in 2010 to regulate organ transplantation in Pakistan, there remains a conspicuous lack of enthusiasm for organ donation. This raises questions about the factors contributing to this reluctance within the Pakistani community.
Authorities must take decisive action to promote organ donation, aligning with the principles of the 2010 legislation. The current apathy towards organ donation in Pakistan is not only puzzling but also a pressing concern that demands urgent attention to prevent the unnecessary loss of lives.
