Mental health taboo

Mental health taboo

KARACHI:

Mental health was once considered a taboo subject, particularly in our culture. Everyone, regardless of age or gender, confronts mental stress on a daily basis, which leads to a variety of mental diseases such as depression and anxiety. While the degree varies, many who want professional assistance are hesitant to seek it out for fear of being judged. People in contemporary society believe that if a person is physically fit, he or she is doing well.

Most people may not realize that mental health patients, particularly those suffering from depression, work exceedingly hard to appear normal; something that is painful and torturous. This pretense exacerbates their symptoms and their sense of hopelessness, which are common in conditions like depression and anxiety. Statistics reveal that 47% of people in Karachi suffer from depression. It is critical that we begin to address concerns pertaining to mental health. We must ensure that we spread knowledge and awareness regarding said issues; as only then will those who are affected be able to reach out and seek help.
