Don’t ignore the pedestrians

Don’t ignore the pedestrians

KARACHI:

Signal-free projects reduce traffic congestion for motorists, but they have detrimental effects on pedestrians. For example, a new signal-free project in Lahore has resulted in a situation where it has become nearly impossible for cancer patients to cross the road on foot to access life-saving treatment. Earlier, patients from far-flung areas staying in charitable housing could easily cross the distance of about 950 metres to visit Shaukat Khanum Hospital.

However, after a new signal-free project, this crossing has become hazardous and nearly impossible to use. About 44% of patients at this hospital are from outside of Punjab, which means that accommodation facilities for patients play a crucial role in helping patients complete cancer treatment. The absence of such facilities often leads to treatment abandonment in low and middle-income groups. These aspects are considered an essential part of developing a supportive ecosystem for cancer patients.

In Johar Town, Lahore, families have helped establish free accommodation facilities for cancer patients and now accessing these facilities is becoming nearly impossible for patients due to new construction projects. On behalf of cancer patients already struggling with a myriad of challenges, this is an appeal to our urban planners and relevant authorities to please facilitate affected patients by building a pedestrian bridge. Often, the impact of mega urban projects on local communities and the underprivileged is ignored but it is never too late to help make a difference.
