KARACHI:
The interim government, often referred to as a caretaker government, has played a crucial role in providing relief to the people by reducing petrol prices and decreasing the rates of daily commodities. They have also managed to stabilise the exchange rate of the dollar, preventing its undue fluctuation and have taken steps to curb electricity theft. These efforts have been instrumental in upholding the fundamental rights of the people.
Despite having a minimal number of ministers and cabinet members in office, their policies are undeniably geared towards the welfare of the people. It’s not uncommon for elected governments, before coming into power, to promise the moon and pledge to meet the basic necessities of life for the citizens. They make grandiose promises, vowing to transform the country into a model akin to Paris and to elevate the nation to new heights. However, these promises often remain unfulfilled once they are in power. For instance, the PML-N, which has held power on multiple occasions, made commitments to boost the economy, improve infrastructure and provide maximum relief to the people. Regrettably, these promises often proved to be mere rhetoric.
The PPP, in power in Sindh for the past 15 years, has had a nightmarish tenure marked by nepotism and corruption leading to the erosion of meritocracy and the plundering of public institutions for personal gain. There was a sense of hope when the PTI came to power. However, they faced challenges in delivering these commitments leaving many disillusioned. The caretaker government’s actions stand out as a beacon of hope. There is a strong desire among the public for the caretaker government to remain in power for an extended duration. In a landscape where grand political promises often fall short, the interim government’s tangible actions are a breath of fresh air for the citizens.
