Diplomatic dilemmas

KARACHI:

After India refused to come to Pakistan for the Asia Cup earlier this year, Pakistan’s departure to India for the ICC World Cup was met with mixed reactions. It was heartening to see Pakistani players receive a warm and enthusiastic welcome from India and its people. Such gestures were indeed appreciated.

However, a controversy arose when PCB chief Zaka Ashraf referred to India as a “dushman mulk” (enemy nation). This choice of words raises questions about professionalism and the state of our diplomacy. The incident highlights the need for better diplomatic conduct. Fortunately, the Pakistani public and cricket enthusiasts swiftly condemned Zaka Ashraf’s statement, indicating a higher sense of diplomacy among the nation’s people compared to our leaders.

Furthermore, recent events involving the head of the interim government, Anwar ul Haq Kakar, during his visit to the US have raised concerns. His apparent self-promotion through excessive photo-taking displayed unprofessional behaviour. Pakistan’s significant geostrategic importance necessitates leaders who are well-versed in professionalism. They should seek advice from experts and think tanks on how to handle diplomatic matters effectively.
