KARACHI:
Pakistan’s fractured education system has hindered its overall growth and development. The failure to transform curriculum and teaching methodologies over time has further worsened the situation. The country was once known for its great scientists. However, today, we do not see any Pakistanis gaining international recognition for their discoveries or research. Widespread corruption and the absence of checks and balances have allowed school administrative staff and teachers to get away with malpractices. For instance, teacher absenteeism remains a major issue in many schools across the country. The minimal funds and resources allocated to schools are rarely used to refurbish schools and equip them with basic facilities. Teachers are hired based on nepotism and favouritism. They lack the proper qualifications and training required for teaching and are unable to facilitate students appropriately. Consequently, many students struggle during examinations and university entrance tests.
Comprehensive reforms should be implemented to address the persistent educational challenges. There is a need to reform the curriculum, train teachers, and allocate sufficient budget to improve educational standards and ensure widespread access. A strong education system can pave the way for a brighter future, fostering a skilled workforce, promoting social mobility and contributing to sustainable economic growth.
