KARACHI:
In Pakistan, women constitute 48.6% of the total population but the female literacy rate is 48% as compared to 70% of the male population. Females still lack access to education In many parts of the country. Men are considered the sole breadwinner of the house due to which girls are forced to focus on domestic chores instead of gaining an education or seeking employment.
This mindset not only places an undue burden on men but impedes women’s progress and deems women inferior. Consequently, women continue to face many challenges in their daily lives, which they could have avoided to a great extent if they had access to education. As a society, we need to rethink our values and our priorities. It is about time that we end this tyrannical circle and break the chains of oppression as it is unfair to categorise an entire demographic as inferior.
Our society cares more about marrying their daughters into the right family and making sure they have enough dowry, so they are respected by their in-laws. If there is one thing we should give our daughters, it is their right to be educated so that they can support themselves when needed. We should equip them with knowledge and skills so that they do not feel trapped in certain situations. We should ensure that they are not dependent on others and support and empower them so that they can raise their voices when they are not treated fairly or justly.
