Destigmatising menstruation

KARACHI:

Menstruation is a natural biological process experienced by half of the world’s population, yet it has been surrounded by shame and stigma for far too long in many cultures, including Pakistan. The topic of menstruation remains taboo in Pakistan, leading to negative consequences for women’s health, education, and overall well-being. Women and girls are often made to feel embarrassed and ashamed about their periods, leading to a lack of open discussions about menstrual health and hygiene.

The shame associated with menstruation affects women’s mental and emotional well-being leading to feelings of embarrassment, insecurity, and isolation. The lack of open conversations about periods hinders access to proper menstrual education and hygiene products, increasing the risk of infections and health complications. The taboo surrounding menstruation perpetuates gender inequality making it difficult for women to participate fully in society. Girls often miss school during their periods, others drop out once they start menstruating. Inadequate facilities and lack of access to menstrual hygiene products at schools further exacerbate the issue. This absenteeism negatively impacts girls’ education leading to lower academic results.

To combat the stigma around menstruation, it is essential to promote menstrual health education from an early age. This education should be integrated into school curriculums and community awareness programs, educating students about menstruation, and breaking the taboo. By normalising conversations about periods, we can foster a society that is more compassionate, understanding, and supportive of women’s health. The healthcare department should work with non-governmental organisations and private organisations to provide free or subsidised sanitary pads and other menstrual hygiene products to women and girls in need. Encouraging open discussions about periods, sharing knowledge, and debunking myths will help dismantle the taboos and empower women to embrace their bodies and reproductive health.
