KARACHI:
The University of Sindh in Jamshoro is one of the oldest institutes in Pakistan. Students from across Sindh come here to seek higher education because of its education standards, affordability, and close proximity to other districts. Recent reports of a 45% increase in fees have raised concerns among students, particularly those who are economically disadvantaged as they will struggle to meet their educational expenses.
The institution’s financial difficulties have resulted in the suspension of scholarships, significantly impacting students’ educational pursuits. Along with confronting its financial challenges, the university must prioritise the students’ well-being. Faculty members should uphold educational standards and quality. Perhaps, the provincial government must step in to facilitate the university to lift some burden off the students.
The university should take proactive steps, such as conducting a comprehensive external audit to evaluate its financial status and identify avenues for cost reduction. Such measures will help establish a transparent system. Instead of discouraging students from pursuing higher education, the university must focus on improving access for marginalised students.
