Electricity theft

Letter July 30, 2023

LARKANA:

Many people have resorted to electricity theft because of frequent power outages and high utility bills. In remote and impoverished localities of Larkana, people tap into the power lines from a point ahead of the energy meter. This energy consumption is unmeasured and procured with or without switches. Others tamper with the meter by placing metals or objects to obstruct the free movement of the disc. A slower rotating disk signals less energy consumption.

Many people say that the SEPCO staff are also involved in these malpractices and it is the people with metered connections who have to pay hefty amounts of detection bills. While those who consume and sell electricity illegally, get away with it as they do not have metered connections. Residents’ complaints about these illegal activities have fallen on deaf ears, which has allowed these mafias to expand their operations and continue their activities. All the residents urge relevant authorities to look into this matter and curb electricity theft by punishing everyone involved in it.
