KARACHI:
In Azad Kashmir, the flour crisis has reached an alarming level. The situation has been exacerbated by the rampant smuggling of subsidised flour to various regions of Pakistan. Flour shortage has also triggered a decline in the availability of clean water facilities further burdening the people.
The government needs to implement proper planning and take decisive actions against smuggling and hoarding to address this issue. One effective approach could be the implementation of a system to track flour sales and distribution. Urging shop owners and flour dealers to record the identity card numbers of individuals purchasing flour can help monitor the distribution chain and identify potential illegal activities. By having a comprehensive database of flour purchases, authorities can analyse consumption patterns, detect irregularities, and curb the smuggling of subsidised flour. This measure would help in ensuring fair distribution but also act as a deterrent for those involved in illegal activities.
The government should promote local production of flour to reduce dependency on external sources. Providing local farmers with necessary support and incentives can boost wheat cultivation and somewhat reduce the crisis in the long run. Furthermore, initiatives for enhancing clean water facilities should be undertaken. The Azad Kashmir flour crisis and its subsequent impact on clean water facilities require urgent attention and a well-thought-out approach from the government. A comprehensive and proactive strategy will be vital to resolve these pressing issues and improve the overall living conditions in Azad Kashmir.
