Language erasure

Language erasure

KARACHI:

Language is a crucial aspect of an individual’s identity. It connects people with their community, heritage, and culture. Unfortunately, though, our education system has neglected native languages such as Balochi and others and primarily focused on English and Urdu. Consequently, Balochi has now become an endangered language as most people lack proficiency in it and struggle to communicate in the language.

Educational institutes need to introduce native languages in their curriculums to encourage students to learn the languages and acknowledge their historical significance. While English and Urdu can be used as the main language of instruction, other regional languages should also be promoted. This will help the younger generations remain connected with the country’s heritage and foster a sense of connectivity. Cultural and literary events must be organised to further endorse different languages. Literature in different native languages should be promoted and disseminated. Given Pakistan’s rich heritage and culture, we must celebrate our diversity and give equal recognition to all languages and cultures.
