KARACHI:
Earlier, this week, I had to commute from Dadu to Karachi via a public bus service. The bus ticket usually costs Rs1,000 to Rs1,200. However, due to an influx of passengers because of Eid and the summer holidays, the bus services began charging three times the amount of the regular fare. The absence of government monitoring and price controls has allowed public transporters to exploit vulnerable passengers who have little choice but to pay high fares.
The absence of safe and affordable public transportation has become a major obstacle for the majority of people. Around the world, countries have successfully landed on the moon, but in Pakistan, many of us are still deprived of basic facilities. Deplorable living conditions have marred people’s daily lives and become a significant obstacle to any form of progress or development. Unfortunately, our political leaders have turned a blind eye to the public’s problems and are busy in their power struggle.
Frequent accidents with public buses on motorways have left people fearful for their lives. The government’s failure to hold companies responsible for their negligent behaviour and exploitative practices signals its disregard for public welfare. All citizens should have access to safe and secure travel options. Therefore, the relevant authorities must implement strict policies for transportation companies, ensure compliance through regular checks, and impose fines for non-compliance. The masses should not be left at the mercy of reckless drivers and exploitative companies.
