High suicide rate

High suicide rate

KARACHI:

A recent report has revealed that 65 persons including 32 women committed suicide in Tharparkar within the last six months. 51 victims belonged to minority communities. Experts have suggested that the number of actual cases is likely to be much higher. The majority of the victims include younger individuals who were suffering from depression and anxiety. Mental health issues are often a direct consequence of socioeconomic and cultural challenges including worsening living conditions, discrimination against certain groups and communities, etc.

Poor awareness about mental health issues and the absence of adequate support have further aggravated the problem. The youth are increasingly turning to drug abuse or social isolation as they do not have any avenues to speak about their struggles and problems. Unfortunately, our leaders remain busy in their power struggles paying little attention to the public’s predicaments. Punishments for suicide attempts are not a solution and instead, further augment the issue.

The provincial government must pay attention to the problem and form a comprehensive strategy to address it effectively. The healthcare department should work with private hospitals and non-governmental organisations to extend mental health support and rehabilitation services to the region. Besides, the youth should be offered educational and employment opportunities to enhance their prospects. Crucially, minorities’ rights should be safeguarded, and they should be protected by law enforcement agencies against any form of violence and exploitation.
