Addressing inequality

KARACHI:

The Sindh Higher Education Commission (SHEC) was established following the 18th Constitutional Amendment in 2013. It aimed to enhance higher education, research, and development in Sindh and facilitate higher learning institutions in becoming catalysts for socio-economic progress and improving the quality of higher education. The commission prioritises faculty development, increasing education accessibility, promoting excellence in research and learning, effective governance and management, quality assessment and accreditation, as well as physical and technological infrastructure development.

However, the recent announcement of utility allowances exclusively for SHEC employees has left employees within the higher education institutions of Sindh disappointed. This decision undermines the hard work and dedication of university staff who play a crucial role in the education system. It contradicts the principle of fairness and overlooks the commission’s mission and poses a threat to the motivation and morale of university employees whose commitment is integral to the success of the higher education sector.

Universities serve as the foundation of knowledge and innovation, shaping the future of our country. Therefore, the contributions of faculty members, researchers, and administrative staff who work tirelessly to uphold education standards and foster intellectual growth must be acknowledged. Neglecting their entitlement to utility allowances, particularly amid the prevailing economic challenges sends a discouraging message. SHEC must reconsider its decision and address the concerns of university staff, ensuring fairness and equity in the provision of allowances. By rectifying this oversight, the SHEC can demonstrate its commitment to the development and progress of the higher education sector in the province.
