KARACHI:
Every year Tharparkar attracts thousands of tourists because of its unique dunes, Karoonjhar mountains, cultural diversity, ancient temples, shrines, and wildlife. The lack of facilities has become a cause of concern for both tourists and the local communities. Nagarparkar town with its hills, mountains, and numerous Hindu holy places, is especially popular among visitors. However, the absence of guest houses, quality food, and even basic restroom facilities has resulted in difficulties for families and a subpar experience for tourists.
The absence of proper guidance and safety measures in the constructed dams has led to tragic incidents, such as drownings. Recent reports of a young person drowning in a deep dam highlight the urgent need for preventive measures and emergency response systems. The relevant authorities must take immediate action to ensure the safety of visitors who may unknowingly engage in risky activities like bathing in deep dams. Life-saving measures and proper signage should be put in place to mitigate such risks.
Considering that the tourism season has commenced, the Culture and Tourism Department should take proactive measures to enhance tourists’ experience. Temporary tent villages should be set up in strategic locations to accommodate tourists. They should be equipped with basic facilities such as clean bedding, electricity, and proper sanitation. Local communities and entrepreneurs can offer high-quality food options that cater to various dietary preferences. This will provide locals with an alternative source of income as well as promote Tharparkar’s traditional cuisine. Medical centres should be established to ensure prompt assistance in case of an emergency. Trained guides and law enforcement personnel should be present at tourist sites to educate tourists about the potential risks and provide guidance on safe practices. These improvements will benefit the tourists and contribute to the socio-economic development of the region.
