LAHORE:
In recent times, the number of Pakistani economic migrants undertaking perilous journeys to Europe has risen significantly. These individuals face numerous challenges, including human trafficking and life-threatening conditions during their migration, underscoring the severity of their situation back home.
The decision to leave one’s homeland reflects the deep-rooted challenges Pakistan faces, including high unemployment, limited access to quality education and healthcare, and persistent poverty. Political instability and corruption further compound these issues, prompting many to seek better opportunities abroad. While acknowledging the hardships faced by these migrants, it is essential to recognise their potential contributions to their host countries and to Pakistan if provided with appropriate support. Many migrants become skilled workers, benefiting host nations with their talents and labour.
In light of this, collaboration between Pakistan and European countries can lead to more sustainable migration solutions. This could include skill development and legal pathways for temporary work, reducing dependence on irregular migration. By doing so, we can help individuals fulfill their aspirations while contributing positively to both Pakistan and Europe.
