KARACHI:
Pakistan generates approximately 49.6 million tons of solid waste a year increasing more than 2.4% annually. Each year, more than 8 million animals are sacrificed on Eid-ul-Adha which results in a significant amount of waste that further increases environmental pollution challenges.
The inedible offal and other discarded parts should be discarded responsibly and sustainably. Perhaps, the relevant authorities should implement different solutions to minimise waste and maximise the value of these byproducts not just on Eid but all year round. For instance, rendering involves extracting valuable compounds by heating bones, fats, and tissues, to produce tallow, protein meal, and grease. Recycling enables the production of bone meal, gelatin, and leather from the waste. Additionally, the manufacturing sector can utilise these byproducts in the production of glue, pet food, and fertiliser.
Efficient waste collection and utilisation of these byproducts can prevent health issues and minimise environmental impacts. The government must play a proactive role in the collection of this waste from all over the country. By promoting the sustainable use of sacrificial animal byproducts, we can foster a more environmentally conscious approach to waste management and create a positive impact on both our society and the environment.
