The intricate nature of tax forms and the extensive documentation required is rather overwhelming for the average taxpayer. The government and the Federal Board of Revenue’s (FBR) failure to simplify the formats of tax returns has perpetuated a complex system that burdens the general taxpayer and hinders the expansion of our tax base.
Many small businesses and enterprises are operating in the informal economy due to red tape and complex taxation processes because of which the country is missing out on significant tax revenue. To foster voluntary tax compliance and economic participation, the government should simplify tax filing. Streamlining formats, reducing documentation, and implementing user-friendly digital platforms will empower taxpayers. Besides, a balanced approach should be adopted to address the informal economy, as it currently represents the only source of income and a critical safety net for millions of people. The government should create an environment where every citizen can contribute to our nation’s progress with ease.
