KARACHI:
Women have played a vital role in global governance. Women in global diplomacy are known for their realistic approach and ability to balance immediate needs with long-term goals. Their involvement in diplomacy has helped extend the scope of issues and enhanced the quality of outcomes. When women hold positions in cabinets and parliaments, they raise issues that benefit ordinary people and the environment and foster social cohesion. But women’s participation in politics remains limited.
Women’s presence in ministerial positions, national parliaments, and local governments around the world is still low. Equal representation in parliaments seems like a far-off dream for now.
Inclusive governance can create positive long-term changes. It is crucial to recognise and celebrate women’s contributions to diplomacy as their achievements are often overlooked. Advocating for increased representation of women in decision-making positions will shape multilateral agendas and drive progress toward gender equality. To acknowledge the significance of women in diplomacy, the United Nations General Assembly designated 24th June as the International Day of Women in Diplomacy. Member states, UN organisations, non-governmental groups, academic institutions, and female diplomats’ associations are encouraged to commemorate this day through diverse activities such as education and raising public awareness.
On this day, we shall especially celebrate the achievements of Pakistani female diplomats who have made significant contributions to diplomacy. The list is short but highly significant and includes diplomats such as Ra’ana Liaquat Ali Khan, Shaista Suhrawardy Ikramullah, Masuma Hassan, Maleeha Lodhi, Sherry Rehman, Hina Rabbani Khar, etc. These remarkable women, along with many others, have demonstrated their critical role in diplomacy, promoting understanding, and fostering cooperation on the global stage. They serve as role models and a source of inspiration for young women across the country who aim to serve the country.
