Skills enhancement

Skills enhancement

KARACHI:

The women of Tharparkar face several challenges and have limited opportunities to improve their social mobility. Low literacy rates among girls coupled with household chores such as fetching water and agricultural work prevent women from participating in socioeconomic activities and social decision-making processes. Despite these hardships, many women display their resilience and hard work through their exquisite, handcrafted embroidery.

A skill enhancement programme should be launched for female artisans to empower them. The programme should focus on training and workshops to enhance their skills and introduce them to new techniques and methods. This will help them produce higher quality products thereby increasing their chances of earning better remuneration. In addition, creating linkages to the market is vital for these women. They need access to broader consumer bases and opportunities to showcase and sell their handmade items. This can be achieved through partnerships with local businesses, organisations, or even online platforms. By establishing these connections, the women of Tharparkar can reach a broader customer base and gain recognition for their craftsmanship.

The government can raise awareness and promote the cultural significance of handcrafted products through exhibitions, fairs, or cultural events that highlight their work and attract potential buyers. By appreciating and valuing their handmade items, the market demand for their products can increase improving opportunities for them. Efforts should be made to create an equitable pricing structure, where the women receive appropriate payment for their hard work and skill. Equipping the women of Tharparkar with appropriate knowledge and skills will help lift them out of poverty, improve their socioeconomic conditions, and create a more inclusive and equitable society. This will not only boost their confidence and self-esteem but also contribute to the overall development of the community.
