Haphazard examination

KARACHI:

The Sindh Public Service Commission (SPSC) is responsible for conducting exams that determine the futures of many aspirants. Unfortunately, though, the recent written exams have been conducted haphazardly leaving candidates distressed about the outcomes.

The specialist test included all subjects, which created confusion among candidates as they had only prepared for their area of expertise. Consequently, many qualified and competent candidates with bachelor’s and master’s degrees will not score well on the exam and fail to move to the recruitment stage. Perhaps, the SPSC should issue clear guidelines on the exam content along with providing a detailed list of the subject matter and study materials to ensure all candidates are properly prepared.

Even the interview process has many incoherences. For instance, a candidate interviewing for the position of an English Language Lecturer is asked about historical events and personalities. While it is good to ensure that candidates are well-versed in all subjects, it is unfair to judge them based on their general knowledge instead of questioning them about the position they are pursuing. The SPSC must revisit its examination and recruitment policies and apply modern methods and techniques to gauge the competence of aspirants. They should also make sure that all aspirants are informed of these changes beforehand to avoid any confusion later.
