KARACHI:
Pakistani society has long been characterised by deeply ingrained gender stereotypes, which assign rigid roles and expectations to men and women. Men are often expected to be the primary breadwinners, decision-makers, and guardians of the family, while women are confined to the domestic sphere, and are expected to prioritise their roles as wives, mothers, and caretakers. These roles have been reinforced through cultural practices, religious interpretations, and societal expectations, resulting in the marginalisation and subjugation of women.
These gender roles not only restrict women’s opportunities for personal and professional growth but also undermine the potential of men who may wish to pursue alternative paths or prioritise their family life over career ambitions. Moreover, these roles perpetuate harmful power dynamics, inequality, and discrimination against women, leading to the denial of their basic human rights, limited access to education and healthcare, and unequal representation in political and economic spheres.
Inclusive and gender-sensitive curricula should be promoted in educational institutes to challenge the prevailing stereotypes and cultivate a generation that rejects discrimination based on gender. Media outlets can promote gender equality by showcasing diverse and empowering representations of women and men. By highlighting success stories of women who have broken the glass ceiling, promoting male role models who challenge traditional gender norms, and initiating conversations around gender issues, the media can contribute to reshaping societal attitudes and perceptions. The government must create an enabling environment that supports women’s empowerment, gender-balanced participation in decision-making processes, and equitable distribution of resources. Encouraging initiatives such as parental leave for both men and women, affordable childcare facilities, and inclusive workplace policies can go a long way in breaking down barriers. By embracing gender equality and dismantling these roles, we can create a more inclusive, just, and prosperous Pakistan.
