Turbat’s suicide problem

KARACHI:

Turbat is considered a highly literate region of Balochistan that produces many educators and other professionals. But the city’s burgeoning suicide problem has become a cause of concern for many. Although it is difficult to ascertain the reasons for the rise in suicide, some of these include deteriorating socio-economic conditions, societal pressures and expectations, mental health challenges, etc.

The youth are more vulnerable to depression and suicide as they have grown disillusioned with the country’s education and economic prospects. They often fear letting their parents down and see suicide as the only viable option. Many families have been torn apart because of the rising suicide problem. There is an urgent need to improve awareness about mental health issues and the need for mental health rehabilitation services.

The provincial government has turned a blind eye to the issue, but it needs to address the problem by introducing counselling support as well as improving educational and economic opportunities for Turbat’s youth. The government must protect the physical and mental health and well-being of future nation-builders.
