Aviation hazards

KARACHI:

Around the world, countries have made efforts to reduce carbon emissions from industrial activities and vehicles. However, most have overlooked the environmental threat posed by airplanes. Jets and airplanes burn large amounts of fossil fuels, resulting in large greenhouse gas emissions, including carbon dioxide.

They also release nitrogen oxides, sulphur oxides and particulate matter contributing to smog, acid rain and respiratory problems. Aircraft contrails trap heat in the atmosphere raising the risk of global warming. Additionally, airports generate water pollution due to their extensive handling of jet fuel and de-icing chemicals, which contaminate nearby water bodies.

Therefore, there is an urgent need to invest in research and development for more well-organised engines and alternative energy sources. Stricter regulations and standards should be imposed on the aviation industry. Sustainable aviation fuels should be promoted. Exploring alternatives to air travel, such as high-speed rail can also reduce demand. Individuals can make a difference by choosing for direct flights, flying less frequently and compensating carbon emissions. To protect our environment, we must admit and mitigate the environmental impact of jets and airplanes. Let us take collective action for a greener future.
