KARACHI:
The incidence of cancer among Balochistan’s residents has risen exponentially within the last five years. One of the main reasons for the increase in cancer cases is the lack of awareness among people about the causes and preventive measures. Most people are not aware of the risk factors associated with cancer and fail to take timely and necessary precautions to prevent the disease.
Another major cause is the widespread use of tobacco. According to the World Health Organisation, tobacco is responsible for causing various types of cancers, including lung, throat, and mouth cancer. The consumption of unhealthy food is also a contributing factor to the increase in cancer cases. The province is known for its spicy and oily cuisine high in fat, sugar, and salt. The excessive consumption of such food is linked to several types of cancer, including colon, breast, and prostate cancer. The people of Balochistan are also exposed to harmful chemicals due to unsafe and hazardous industrial activities. The absence of regulations and safety measures has led to the release of dangerous chemicals into the environment.
The government and healthcare authorities must take urgent measures to address the issue. People should be informed about the risk factors associated with cancer and the preventive measures. They should be discouraged from tobacco consumption and the government should act against the illegal trade of cigarettes. Factories should be monitored to prevent them from engaging in harmful practices. The lack of adequate treatment facilities forces cancer patients to travel long distances to receive treatment, which is a significant burden on them and their families. The government must invest in cancer treatment facilities and equipment across Balochistan to ensure that patients receive the best possible care and treatment.
