Plight of peacocks

Plight of peacocks

KARACHI:

Tharparkar is known for its vibrant peacock population, which can be found across the region in large numbers. Unfortunately, the harsh climatic conditions pose significant challenges to their survival. During the hot summer months, the absence of sufficient water sources and food leaves the peacocks vulnerable to dehydration, malnutrition, and disease. Despite the efforts of volunteers who have tirelessly worked to protect these majestic birds, the recent deaths of 50 peacocks due to the scorching summer heat, lack of water, and poaching indicate a grave situation that requires intervention.

The outbreak of blindness and leg deformities among the peacock population is further threatening their survival. Urgent attention and assistance are required from the veterinary department to curb the outbreak. To protect the remaining peacock population in Tharparkar, the relevant authorities should ensure a sufficient and accessible water supply for the peacocks. Water pots should be installed in strategic locations throughout their habitats to meet their hydration needs. Appropriate food sources must also be provided. Their natural food supply should be replenished, and supplementary feeding programs should be introduced. The peacocks and other wildlife should receive timely and regular medical attention to prevent disease outbreaks and long-term ailments.

Local communities, wildlife conservation organisations, and government authorities need to work collectively to protect the peacock population in Tharparkar. Awareness campaigns, educational initiatives, and stricter enforcement of wildlife protection laws should be implemented to combat poaching and other threats. We must recognise the importance of preserving the rich biodiversity of our region. The beauty and ecological significance of peacocks in Tharparkar are invaluable, and their decline would be a tremendous loss. We need to unite to protect these majestic creatures and preserve the natural heritage of our beloved land.
