Internet shutdown

Internet shutdown

KARACHI:

The recent internet shutdown coupled with a ban on different social media platforms following Imran Khan’s arrest has had a detrimental impact on the lives of people across the nation. One group that has been disproportionately affected by this internet shutdown are home delivery riders and cab drivers using online applications to book their customers. These hardworking individuals rely on mobile data and internet connectivity to carry out their duties efficiently and provide timely service to customers.

Unfortunately, the unavailability of 4g internet has caused immense hardships for these daily wage earners. Furthermore, freelancers and small businesses have also suffered greatly due to the internet suspension. These individuals rely on the internet to carry out their work, communicate with clients, and access necessary resources. The disruption caused by the internet shutdown has resulted in significant financial losses with the Telecom Consumers Association (TCA) estimating a loss of Rs520 million as a direct consequence of the ban.

The Internet is crucial in modern society. It serves as a platform for communication, education, business and access to information. Restrictions on internet access not only stifle economic growth but also infringe on the right of citizens to freely express themselves. I request the authorities to resume nationwide access to the internet and reconsider the restrictions on social media platforms.
