GILGIT:
Individuals employed by the government often criticise other graduates for being overly fixated on government jobs, while they themselves enjoy the benefits of such jobs. The desire for government jobs is evident because many strive for them. There is a general belief that private sector jobs offer low salaries as well as low respect for employees. Private sector jobs also tend to be more hierarchical and inflexible with little room for employees to make decisions or influence company direction.
On the contrary, government jobs provide employees with some level of autonomy and freedom to make decisions within their jurisdiction. So, this fixation on government jobs is not solely driven by the allure of high salaries, but also by the desire for greater self-esteem and the ability to exercise free will, which is perceived to be limited in the private sector. Government jobs also come with better benefits packages, including healthcare, retirement plans, and paid time off. These benefits are highly valued by employees as they provide a sense of security and stability for themselves and their families.
Government jobs can also offer employees the opportunity to work on projects that have a direct impact on their communities and the world at large. For those who are motivated by a sense of purpose and a desire to make a positive impact working for the government can be highly fulfilling. While the debate over the allure of government jobs will continue, there are valid reasons why many individuals, particularly young graduates, aspire to secure a position in the public sector.
