KARACHI:
Balochistan is renowned for its rich heritage and exquisite handicrafts including embroidery. Traditional Balochi embroidery is well-known for its beautiful patterns and designs and colours. Most women in the province spend hours on needlework embroidery to earn for their families. It is easier for them to undertake this work as it requires little mobility, and the materials are easily available and accessible.
Across the province, different forms of handicraft, and needlework are prevalent. For instance, Kalat is famous for its mirror work dresses, and Khuzdar is known for its handmade Balochi shoes. It is difficult to trace the roots and heritage of the different forms of craft, but many of these are intrinsic to Baloch culture. Some historians have suggested that Balochi embroidery dates back to pre-Islamic times.
In recent years, Balochi embroidery has gained significant recognition and popularity with designers and fashion houses beyond the region. The increasing popularity of Balochi embroidery has also led to the creation of cooperatives and NGOs that work with local artisans to promote and preserve the art form. Perhaps, the provincial government can lend the local artisans and craftspeople a helping hand by providing them with a platform to showcase and promote their work. They should also be trained and informed about pricing their items and negotiating with buyers. This will not only help local artisans but also allow them to contribute to the country’s economy as well as preserve the Baloch culture and heritage.
