Blessing or a curse?

Blessing or a curse?

KARACHI:

In today’s global system, freedom of thought, liberty, expression and the press have become integral to a democratic society. Modern digital media has become a fundamental and influential pillar of nation-states wielding unparalleled influence over shaping, manipulating, and destroying narratives at a mass level.

With the power to elevate heroes to villains and vice versa, media can impact one’s way of life on a grand scale. Its virtual nature has erased geographical boundaries and transformed the world into a global village removing social, political, and cultural differences among people. The media’s role in educating and improving awareness, forming opinions, and providing entertainment cannot be reversed. The tides of media’s horizon and domain can be altered in nature and composition, but its impact remains the same. However, the media should be held accountable for its actions, and there must be a balance between media freedom and responsibility.

In recent times, media organisations have failed to uphold their responsibility and used their power to spread disinformation, sow division, and undermine democracy. Such behaviour is not only unethical but also harmful to society. Media organisations must take into account the cultural, social, and political differences among people. They must promote understanding and respect for diversity, rather than perpetuating stereotypes or promoting hate speech. Media is a double-edged sword that can shape and impact society. While media freedom is essential for a healthy democracy, it must be balanced by responsibility and accountability. As consumers of media, we must demand that the media fulfil its role responsibly and ethically. This will help ensure that the media continues to play a positive role in shaping the world.
