Heatwave precautions

Heatwave precautions

KARACHI:

The ongoing heatwave in Karachi is causing great discomfort and concern among the residents. Temperatures are soaring to unprecedented levels, making it difficult for people to carry out their daily activities. However, with proper precautionary measures, people can stay safe and healthy even during such extreme weather conditions. The heat wave is caused by a high-pressure system that is moving over the city bringing hot and dry winds from the north. This is resulting in temperatures as high as 40 degrees Celsius, which is well above the average for this time of year. The situation is exacerbated by the high humidity levels, which make the heat feel more oppressive.

Karachiites must take precautionary measures to protect themselves from the heatwave. People should stay hydrated and avoid spending too much time in the sun. Those who are required to work outside must find shaded areas or wear hats or caps and use sunscreen to protect their skin. People should wear loose and lightweight clothing so that the air circulates and keeps them cool. Pregnant women, sick and elderly must stay indoors, particularly during the day to avoid the adverse impact of the heat on their health.

Everyone should be aware of the signs of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Some of the symptoms include dizziness, nausea, headaches, rapid heartbeat, and confusion. If people experience any of these symptoms, they must immediately seek medical attention. The government, NGOs, and civil society can undertake different measures to mitigate or limit the impact of the heatwave. People should be informed about the precautionary measures. Water coolers must be placed on bus stops and other busy areas and shaded areas must be created across the city. People should give out cold water bottles to labourers and others working outdoors.
