Dearth of sciences

Dearth of sciences

KARACHI:

Education is the backbone of any progressive society. Sciences are a crucial aspect of any modern education system, and students should have access to proper laboratories and equipment. Unfortunately, in Sindh, the situation is quite the opposite, particularly when it comes to science laboratories in government schools. Students do not receive the hands-on experience they need to fully understand scientific concepts, which negatively affects their learning.

Most government schools do not have laboratories and the few that do are in shabby condition without adequate materials. The absence of a safe and conducive learning environment further affects the overall academic progress of students because they do not have healthy interactions with teachers and peers. This prevents them from developing critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Students in rural areas who often belong to impoverished families have limited access to educational opportunities. Therefore, they are at a significant disadvantage when it comes to pursuing careers in fields such as engineering, medicine, and information technology.

The Sindh government should take the necessary steps and invest sufficient resources to revamp the existing science laboratories and create new ones across schools in the province. Students should have access to all the materials and resources to gain exposure, mould their skills and acquire relevant knowledge. We need to enhance students’ exposure to sciences and technology to keep pace with the rapidly changing world. Thus, the government must ensure that all students receive quality education where all necessary resources are available.
