KARACHI:
The Pakistani media has been preoccupied with covering ongoing political farce rather than incidents that directly impact ordinary citizens’ lives. The media’s failure to cover incidents affecting people in different parts of the country is a disservice to the victims and their families and raises serious concerns about the state of journalism in Pakistan.
Mainstream Pakistani media has long neglected the stories and incidents occurring in Gilgit-Baltistan (G-B). G-B’s residents have been marginalised, and their voices are regularly ignored by the media. Incidents affecting regular citizens should receive the same coverage irrespective of where they occur in the country. The media can play an important role in improving conscientiousness among the people and demanding accountability from political leaders. Thus, it should do better to improve reporting on marginalised and minority communities, such as those in G-B.
