Decline in diversity

Decline in diversity

KARACHI:

The youth make up a large proportion of Pakistan’s population. Most youngsters consume the content on television but are the media outlets catering to the youth? A decade ago, there were many television shows ranging from reality television shows that required people to perform different challenges, to comedy shows and TV serials. Many of these shows were extremely popular amongst the youth back in the day.

Nowadays, most television channels have limited their content to dramas that propagate gender stereotypes, toxic relationships, domestic violence, etc. These dramas are far removed from the realities of people’s daily lives. But the constant promulgation of problematic and regressive ideas results in people adapting them into their daily lives. Television channels no longer produce shows that showcase the talent and potential of our younger generations.

It is high time that television channels make room for the youth in their studios to bring in a fresh perspective. The youth are in touch with the new trends and know the type of content people want to consume. Thus, channels must change their approach and allow new ideas.
