KARACHI:
Larkana is the fourth-largest city in Sindh and is known for its rich historical and cultural heritage. However, for the last few years, the city has been scuffling with the issue of garbage disposal. It has become a major source of concern for the residents.
Administrative negligence, poor planning and the absence of waste management policies have resulted in garbage accumulation across the city. A World Health Organisation report revealed that Larkana generates approximately 500 tonnes of waste every day. However, the city lacks the infrastructure and resources to handle this large amount of waste. Residents of Larkana have contributed to the issue by disposing of their trash in open spaces, which not only pollutes the environment but also poses serious health risks to the people.
Local leaders need to adopt a comprehensive approach to resolve the issue. This includes investing in infrastructure and resources to regulate waste management, implementing waste disposal policies, and educating citizens about the importance of proper waste disposal. Leaders should also urge citizens to participate in community-based initiatives to clean up the city and spread awareness about the issue. By investing in infrastructure, implementing proper policies, and educating citizens, we can build a cleaner and healthier environment for the citizens of Larkana.
