University in disarray

Letter April 16, 2023
University in disarray

BUNER:

Peshawar University is among the top-ranking public sector universities in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa. The recent unfortunate incident in which the security supervisor was fatally shot when a fellow security guard’s firearm went off accidentally has left the university in disarray. The student body demanded the university probe into the incident and urged the administration to remove all illegal and fatal weapons from the campus to avoid such tragic incidents in the future. This was followed by another protest by the faculty that demanded a pay rise. Some teachers boycotted classes depriving students of important education. Even the library was locked up leaving students with no choice but to return to their homes or hostels. Disagreements between faculty and administration are hampering students’ education. The issue has been dragging on for several weeks now. The administration must resolve the dispute with the faculty to resume academic activities on campus and restore normalcy. Administrative negligence and conflicts have become a persistent problem in public universities across the country. Perhaps, the Higher Education Commission should intervene to form policies to monitor university administration and form a mechanism through which university administrations can resolve issues with faculty and student body.
