Rising thefts

Rising thefts

KARACHI:

The incompetent and lethargic attitude of law enforcement agencies (LEAs) has contributed to the rising lawlessness across the country. Every day, many citizens are robbed of their belongings and lives. Within the last two weeks, more than two dozen motorcycles have been stolen from the Civil Hospital in Hyderabad.

More than 190 CCTV cameras are installed on the premises of the civil hospital. The CCTV room incharge revealed that at least 4 to 5 bikes are stolen daily. Earlier this week, my relatives went to the hospital for a medical emergency. Their motorcycle was stolen minutes after they entered the hospital. The thieves’ faces were visible in the CCTV footage, yet the police said that it is difficult to trace the culprits and retrieve the motorcycle.

One cannot help but wonder what the job of the police is if they cannot even recover citizens’ stolen belongings despite having ample evidence. No wonder people have lost trust in our LEAs and taken the law into their own hands. The apathetic attitude of the hospital security and the Hyderabad police is worrisome. People are already facing numerous challenges, and the rising incidents of theft and robbery are further adding to their woes. I urge the Hyderabad police to cooperate with citizens and register FIRs as well as increase patrolling to restore security in the city.
