Benefits of fasting

TURBAT:

In recent years, fasting has gained significant popularity worldwide, but many people, particularly non-Muslims still express their reservations about fasting for 12 to 14 hours. The practice of fasting dates back centuries and is a crucial part of Islam. Besides its religious and spiritual significance, fasting has several health benefits that all those who fast regularly should be aware of.

Research has revealed that fasting helps improve blood sugar control, which can be especially useful for those at risk of diabetes. It promotes blood sugar control by reducing insulin resistance. Fasting can also enhance heart health by improving blood pressure, and cholesterol levels. Some studies have found that fasting can decrease several markers of inflammation and may be useful in treating inflammatory conditions, such as multiple sclerosis. It also boosts metabolism, which can help with reducing body weight and body fat.

Some animal studies and test-tube studies have suggested that fasting can block tumour development and increase the effectiveness of chemotherapy. Fasting also improves brain functioning, increases nerve cell synthesis, and protects against neurodegenerative conditions, such as Alzheimer’s disease. Besides this, fasting also purifies the soul and allows one to focus on improving moral character and behaviour. Many people engage in charitable acts during the month, which fosters a sense of community. As we observe the month of Ramadan, we must remember these benefits and help the less fortunate as much as possible so that they can also enjoy the true spirit of the month.
