KARACHI:
Pakistan has a high incidence of depression and other mental health conditions. High rates of mental illnesses among the Pakistani population stem from poor awareness about mental health and mental health support. Most individuals are unable to identify symptoms of mental illnesses on their own and continue suffering until they can no longer bear the pressure.
The country has high rates of depression and suicide, particularly among the younger population. The worsening socio-economic situation coupled with few outlets to relieve stress is the major contributor. However, at times, depression is caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain. Depressive episodes can include feelings of sadness or hopelessness, angry outbursts, irritability or frustration over small matters, and loss of interest in hobbies or daily activities. People’s inability to talk about their internal feelings and thoughts further compounds the problem.
As a society, we cannot continue ignoring mental illnesses. We must educate ourselves on mental health conditions and work towards de-stigmatising mental illnesses and psychological support. The healthcare department should improve research and investment in mental health support. Besides establishing mental health rehabilitation centres and facilities, they must ensure that all therapists, psychologists, and psychiatrists have credible qualifications.
